Health

Hospitals

St. Mary’s Hospital of Blue Springs provides state-of-the-art care to Blue Springs residents and our neighbors.

The hospital is home to a renowned Birthing Center. The Birthing Center offers a full range of birth and family enrichment programs for all members of the family. These classes include newborn infant care, breast-feeding and childbirth education. There is even a special class for big brothers and sisters. St. Mary's Hospital of Blue Springs offers a comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation program. It assists patients in both educational counseling in the reduction of risk factors and stress management as well as physical conditioning. In addition to Emergency Services and Inpatient/Outpatient Surgery, St. Mary’s Sleep Clinic features a stat-of-the-art sleep lab.

An important missing link from the impressive list of features at St. Mary’s is its designation as a trauma center. In fact, there is no trauma center in Eastern Jackson County. This is due primarily to malpractice insurance rates and the inability of hospitals to keep the required specialty physicians either on site or on call as required of a trauma center. What this means to us as citizens is that precious minutes are lost whenever one of us is involved in a traumatic accident. Whether we live or die is often determine by the care we receive within the first 60 minutes of trauma. When dozens of minutes must be spent transporting by ambulance or retrieving a life flight, lives hang in the balance. We must emphasize the need to review malpractice insurance with our state and federal representatives.

Other Health Entities

A recent addition to the Blue Springs health landscape is WellLink. WellLink’s mission is to help Blue Springs residents live a healthy and fulfilling life. It serves as a liaison between citizens and a wide variety of traditional and nontraditional wellness services. WellLink recently launched Dental for Kids, which is a new program that provides necessary dental care to Blue Springs area children whose parents cannot afford to pay for treatment and do not have dental insurance.

We are fortunate to have good health care providers and community members who look to assist in health care for those who cannot afford it.

Access to health care is vital in the balance of quality of life.
