Roads
The State of Missouri is notorious for its lack
of upkeep on our state highways. Fortunately, the City of Blue
Springs Public Works Department actually does a good job managing a
skeleton budget to maintain our city roads. One of the most
frustrating parts of driving around town for most residents is
traffic flow. Much of this can be attributed to a lack of focus on
infrastructure. While we have requested and are awaiting budgetary
information, it is our understanding that significantly more money
has been spent on Parks & Recreation than on revising and updating
the streets upon which we travel to get to them.
Our parks are among the best in the area. The
parks system is one of the assets of Blue Springs and enhances our
quality of life. However, many more citizens drive on the streets
than use the parks system. Has this been considered when making
budgetary priorities? Is the issue one of funding? The recent
development project approved for Woods Chapel and I-70 includes
provisions for investing in solutions for the traffic problems on
Woods Chapel. This much needed result is appreciated by the often
forgotten citizens who live on the west side of town. How much
sooner would we have been able to address those traffic concerns if
the City had been able to more effectively attract developers? What
other traffic improvements are delayed because of the City’s
reputation with developers? Is this another aspect of our quality
of life that has deteriorated due to inattention? How much better
and safer would our streets be if the Public Works Department had
the funds to rebuild streets where needed instead of continually
patching or getting by due to budgetary constraints? Meanwhile, how
much money should we spend on skateboard facilities when these other
issues loom large? The beauty of trees is not appreciated when one
must dodge fellow motorists. |
